ABOUT OCULUS RAIL
Building Smarter, More Connected Communities
Oculus Rail was founded with a simple goal: give communities better information about what’s happening at their railroad crossings.
Turning a Local Railroad Crossing Problem Into a Technology Solution
How Oculus Rail Began
Oculus Rail began with a problem founder and CEO Andria McClellan knew well from her eight years on the Norfolk City Council: blocked railroad crossings disrupt traffic, delay emergency responders and frustrate communities. Yet, local leaders often lack the reliable data needed to respond.
After leaving public office, Andria set out to apply new technology to this longstanding infrastructure challenge. The idea was straightforward: give communities timely, independent information about when crossings are blocked, how long delays last and where the greatest impacts occur.
Working with Portsmouth-based Port Solution Integrators and local government partners, Oculus Rail developed a rapidly deployable railroad-crossing monitoring system that transforms crossing activity into real-time alerts and historical intelligence.
In 2025, Oculus Rail successfully piloted the system at 40 crossings across Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. Building on that success, Oculus Rail is now installing sensors in communities across the nation—helping transportation agencies, public-safety teams and local leaders manage disruptions today and make better-informed infrastructure decisions for the future.

Our Competitive Advantage
Oculus Rail delivers crossing intelligence as a managed service. We own, install and maintain the sensors, giving transportation agencies access to reliable real-time and historical data without purchasing equipment or assuming ongoing maintenance responsibilities. Our solar-powered, wireless technology can be deployed rapidly in the public right-of-way without connections to railroad infrastructure, electrical power or wired communications. This service-based approach reduces upfront capital costs, simplifies implementation and allows communities to begin using actionable crossing data sooner.
Mission
To provide reliable real-time and historical railroad crossing intelligence that helps communities improve emergency response, manage congestion, enhance safety and make better-informed infrastructure decisions.
Vision
To make reliable railroad crossing intelligence a standard part of transportation and public-safety operations in communities across North America.
